In our efforts to be more environmentally friendly and to encourage healthier living, we here at CITC Avarua invited all Management and staff of our stores to reduce the use of polystyrene and eventually stop the use of it in our shops.

Polystyrene contains the toxic substances Styrene and Benzene, suspected carcinogens and neurotoxins that are hazardous to humans. Hot foods and liquids actually start a partial breakdown of the Styrofoam, causing some toxins to be absorbed into our bloodstream and tissue.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report on styrene lists many occupational hazards for those who are exposed regularly in the manufacture of products made with styrene. Some of the acute health effects experienced include irritation of the skin, eyes, and the upper respiratory tract.

The EPA report says chronic exposure to styrene leads to further complications, including adverse effects on the nervous and respiratory systems, and possibly the kidney and liver, as well as other issues. It also caused increased spontaneous abortions in women.

Make an Eco-Friendly Choice

Reducing dependence on polystyrene is the best way to decrease its production and effect on the environment. If you want to make eco-friendly choices to eliminate the use of Styrofoam, look for products manufactured from renewable resources, containing biodegradable materials, and those that are easily recycled.

Make the choice to not eat from or drink out of anything made out of polystyrene. Save the environment, save ourselves.

CITC supports the policy on the ban on the importation and use of all single-use polystyrene takeaway containers.  We join with NES, WATSAN and TIS and encourage the adoption of this Policy and the banning of this hazardous material.
